On good days, Parasite supports Ian Hickson & Stuar Langridge's Pingback1.0. It hasn't been a good day in a VERY long time and likely never will be again!

The stuff that Parasite doesn't do for me is done in vim.

Being standards compliant is the only attempt this site makes at being IE friendly.

One: Have you heard the news?
Two: No, what's happened?
One: The good Lord has come down in human form and had himself killed!
Two: To what end?
One: With this act, the Devil is hoodwinked and all humanity saved!
Two: Gosh, that's simply lovely.

Top Eleven Firebird Annoyances
Tuesday Oct 14 2:21pm 2003
by Sam

I'm really, deeply annoyed with Firebird. To make matters worse, everywhere I turn, everyone is lauding it as the best thing since scroll-wheels. So here goes:

  • Open Links in the background
    • I ignored this poorly worded preference for a long long time, thinking that it had something to do with pre-caching links that Firebird thought that I might click on. I had to have someone explain that this preference does in fact open tabs without switching focus to the newly opened tab.
  • Keyboard shortcuts are different than Mozilla's.
    • What the hell?! Why would you do this? The only guess I could come up with would be to imitate IE and that started the WHY loop all over again.
  • Tools | Options
    • Tools options!? WTF is that? What was wrong with Edit | Preferences like every other application that I can think of (including Mozilla!)?
  • Cache Settings
    • When using a web browser for development, caching can be a huge mindfuck. Please let me turn it on and off.
  • Tabs lack built-in functionality
    • I know Tabbrowser Extensions is out there. I know that, as far as I can tell, it only works in Firebird now, when it works. I also know that it doesn't work a lot of the time and, more importantly, when it does work, it works very slowly. I need "Return to previously focused tab on tab-close." I need close-buttons on every tab.
  • Javascript bugs
    • This one truly baffles me. How can Firebird have javascript bugs that Mozilla doesn't have? The Active PHP Bookmarks bookmarklet works and then doesn't work and then works again for a while and so on. How does this happen?
  • I don't even know what it's called!
    • What the hell is that middle-click makes the browser go ape-shit thing? Some round icon floats above the browser and moving my mouse makes it scroll? Who uses this? Why is it on by default?
  • Drag a url to the toolbar folder and kiss your ass goodbye!
    • I went through years of crashiness with Mozilla proper. Why do we have to do it again?
  • Mozilla 1.4.1, Mozilla 1.5pre???, Firebird 0.7
    • How is this good for anyone? Too many concurrent trees spoil the broth, just ask Debian users about Stable.
  • No Preferences/Bookmarks/Passwords/Cookies import from Mozilla
    • Inertia is a bitch. I switched to Firebird because Tabbrowser Extensions quit working in Mozilla proper, and now I get to re-add every bit of data that has gone into Mozilla over the last few years.
  • Text Selection Context Menu Lacks "Back"
    • This isn't specific to Firebird, but it annoys me a few thousand times a day, so it makes the top of the list. When text is selected, the context menu doesn't have "Back" which is the only thing I use any context menu for. Text de-selection is often (read: "always") more difficult than just clicking somewhere on the page.

In case you're here for the first time, I'm not just some random troll. Read the other entries in this blog and you'll see that I've filed many many bug reports and very much want Mozilla to succeed. I'm just frustrated and needed to vent.
